About the Artist
Raven Watkins is an interdisciplinary
artist from Panama City Beach, Florida.
She utilizes drawing, sculpture, ceramics,
printmaking, painting, and graphic design
in her work. She is a third year student at
Florida State University majoring in fine arts
with a focus in drawing and ceramics and a dual
degree in anthropology focusing in forensics.
She uses the anthropology classes to inform her work historically, scientifically, and culturally, with the intention to deeply understand the material she is inspired by. Her work’s artistic perspective focuses on the exploration of life and death through a natural and historical lens, with a specific interest in the mysticism of the deep woods and ocean, and the hypocrisy of religion throughout history. She also has much work inspired by Spanish history and religion as she studied abroad in Valencia Spain. Taking inspiration from the mysticism and potentially averting nature of subjects that touch on topics like crimes against humanity to the functions of the human body, she uses averting topics like this to create conversation about the unknown and and how facing these tough issues reveals an honest reality from holding oneself and others accountable.

Raven is currently beginning independent creative research under the IDEA grant of FSU alongside participating in Honors in the Major for studio art. She has participated in exhibitions since high school, with a solo show in 2022 after her graduation at the Bay Arts Center of Panama City Florida, and her art is published in the Kudzu Review Issue 71, and Six Magazine. She has since been a part of the NASAD exhibition for FSU in figure drawing, ceramics, and sculpture. Since moving to Tallahassee she has exhibited in the 621 Gallery, Phillis Strauss Gallery, and multiple spaces within the FSU campus. She is the current graphic designer of the FSU Surf Club, and has made graphics for WVFS Tallahassee Radio station and Panama City local skate brand “Flipside Supply.” She has a love for the action sports community, and has spent much of her personal time on it, including volunteering 90 hours to aid rebuilding the McElvey Skate park in Panama City Beach, Florida. Alongside this volunteer work, Raven was president of Pura Vida club, which focuses on Latin American culture and environmental conservation, organizing beach clean ups and volunteer events with this organization. These experiences create the foundation of exploration that Raven’s work focuses on, with a desire to explore and have new experiences across the globe.
